Charlot Salwai: A Political Journey in Vanuatu
Early Life and Political BeginningsBorn on Pentecost Island, Charlot Salwai is a member of Vanuatu's French-speaking minority. In 1991, he served as the personal secretary to Prime Minister Maxime Carlot Korman, marking the beginning of his political career.
Parliamentary Career
In 2002, Salwai was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Union of Moderate Parties (UMP), a right-wing Francophone party. From 2004 to 2008, he held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Trade, Natural Resources, and Deputy Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition.
Ministerial Roles
In 2008, Salwai became Minister of Education, a position he held until 2012. He then served as Minister of Finance from 2012 to 2013, during which time he joined the regionalist Namangi Aute party.
Parliamentary Opposition Leader
In 2013, Salwai became Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition. He held this position until 2014, when he briefly served as Minister of Internal Affairs. He returned as Opposition Leader in 2015.
Prime Ministerial Tenure
Despite the Namangi Aute party winning only three seats in the 2016 election, Salwai emerged as a compromise candidate for Prime Minister. He formed a government with the support of nationalist, predominantly English-speaking parties, as well as French-speaking center-right parties. He served as Prime Minister until 2020.
Return as Prime Minister
On October 6, 2023, Salwai was elected Prime Minister again following the ousting of Sato Kilman in a vote of no confidence.
