Nikenike Vurobaravu: President of Vanuatu

Nikenike Vurobaravu is a Vanuatuan politician and diplomat who has served as the President of Vanuatu since July 23, 2022.

Political and Diplomatic Career

Vurobaravu has held numerous diplomatic and government positions. He served as the Vanuatu High Commissioner to Fiji from 2014 to 2022, becoming the country's first resident High Commissioner in Suva. In 2017, he was appointed to a second term as High Commissioner to Fiji.

Presidential Election

In July 2022, Vurobaravu was elected President of Vanuatu in the eighth round of the presidential election. After seven rounds of voting without a majority winner, Vurobaravu secured the support of nine members of former Prime Minister Charlot Salwai's coalition party, resulting in his victory.

Early Life and Education

Vurobaravu earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of the South Pacific, Fiji, in 1987. He also obtained a Master of Arts in Diplomatic Studies from the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom in 1993, where he focused on development cooperation, foreign policy analysis, and diplomatic mission management.

Diplomatic and Government Service

Prior to his presidency, Vurobaravu served as the Coordinator of the Comprehensive Reform Program for Vanuatu for the Asian Development Bank. He also held the position of Political Advisor in the Prime Minister's Office from 2008 to 2010.

Parliament Dissolution

On August 18, 2022, Vurobaravu dissolved Parliament at the request of Prime Minister Bob Loughman to avert a no-confidence motion. The move was met with criticism from the opposition, and Opposition Leader Ralph Regenvanu announced that the parties would challenge the dissolution in court.
