Charlotte Ponce: The Brave Teen Who Overcame a Raccoon Attack

Charlotte Ponce, a fourteen-year-old American girl, has undergone reconstructive surgery to improve her "skillfully crafted" ear and nose, after being severely disfigured by a raccoon. Charlotte, from Spring Lake, Michigan, endured more than ten surgeries since the raccoon attacked her when she was a baby. It is believed that the domestic raccoon lunged at the infant when milk spilled on her face from the bottle she was holding.

A Fighter's Journey

Charlotte underwent her first surgery as a teenager and her eighth surgery, performed by Dr. Koongkirt Chaiyaste, aimed to enhance her facial features. Dr. Chaiyaste praised her resilience, stating that she had never cried or complained during any of the procedures. During the recent 90-minute surgery, Dr. Chaiyaste utilized tissue from Charlotte's abdomen to create a more detailed ear and provide fullness to her upper lip and right cheek. He also used a small piece of tissue from her left ear to enlarge one of her nostrils and correct a scar on her lips. According to Sharon Ponce, Charlotte's paternal grandmother, Dr. Chaiyaste acted like a sculptor during the procedure.

A New Beginning

Sharon and her husband, Tim, adopted Charlotte and her brother after their biological parents lost custody due to the horrific raccoon incident. In 2014, after a previous surgery, Charlotte hoped to be able to wear earrings. Dr. Chaiyaste attempted to thread an earring through Charlotte's right ear using a tiny tube, but it resulted in a tear. However, Dr. Chaiyaste is confident that after the current reconstructive surgery, Charlotte will finally be able to get her ears pierced. She already has 50 pairs of earrings waiting for her at home.

A Journey of Growth

Charlotte first met Dr. Chaiyaste in 2012 when she was a shy girl who avoided eye contact with him. Five years later, Charlotte has become more confident and open. In 2014, Dr. Chaiyaste received recognition for his work on Charlotte. He believes that she may require additional procedures in the future, but they will be focused on refinement. All the expenses for the surgeries have been covered by insurance. Despite facing communication difficulties and battling depression, Charlotte finds strength in her close circle of school friends. Her dream is to pursue biomedical engineering and create prosthetic devices for people when she grows up.
