Chesney Allen, a popular British comedian, gained his greatest fame during World War II as part of the duo "Flanagan and Allen". He was born William Allen on April 5, 1983, in Brighton, East Sussex, England.

Early Life and Meeting with Bud Flanagan

Allen first met Bud Flanagan during their military service in Flanders, although it was just an acquaintance at the time. It wasn't until 1926 that they crossed paths again during a tour of the show "Florrie Forde", and they began working together as the duo "Flanagan and Allen". They were later noticed by television producer Val Parnell, who helped them break into the big screen.

Comedic Style and The Crazy Gang

In their performances, Flanagan and Allen often combined humor and music, delivering highly amusing songs. Flanagan primarily sang, as he had a magnificent voice, while Allen provided backing vocals. In 1931, they joined the renowned British comedy group "The Crazy Gang", which started performing at the Palladium in London. The group also included Jimmy Nervo, Teddy Knox, Charlie Naughton, and Jimmy Gold.

Popularity during World War II

"Flanagan and Allen" gained their greatest popularity during World War II. The duo disbanded in 1946 when Allen faced serious health issues. Until 1962, "Flanagan and Allen" made several stage appearances within the framework of "The Crazy Gang" shows, with Eddie Gray temporarily replacing Allen. In 1968, Bud Flanagan passed away, and Chesney Allen made fewer public appearances. Ironically, Allen outlived all the members of "The Crazy Gang", despite being diagnosed with an illness at the age of fifty-three. In 1982, Allen participated in the recording of an album for the show "Underneath the Arches", marking his final work. In November of the same year, he passed away, leaving behind a multitude of humorous songs that remain popular to this day.
