Early Life and Education
Chetan Anand was born on January 3, 1915, in Lahore, British India (now in Pakistan), to a wealthy lawyer. He had two younger brothers, Dev and Vijay, who later became successful in the film industry. After graduating from Government College Lahore, he worked briefly for the BBC and taught history at Doon School in Dehradun.
Entry into the Film Industry
In the early 1940s, Chetan wrote a screenplay about Emperor Ashoka and traveled to Bombay to sell it. He encountered director Phani Majumdar, who offered him a role in the 1944 film "Rajkumar." Two years later, he made his directorial debut with "Neecha Nagar" (City in the Valley), which won the Grand Prix (along with ten other films) at the inaugural Cannes Film Festival. It was one of the first Indian films to gain international acclaim.
Navketan Productions and Success
In 1949, Chetan Anand co-founded Navketan Productions with his brother Dev Anand. Under this banner, he produced and directed his next film, "Inspector," an adaptation of Nikolai Gogol's play of the same name. The film was a moderate success. It was followed by "Aandhiyan" (Hurricane) and "Taxi Driver." The latter became Chetan Anand's first box office hit and remains the most profitable film produced by Navketan Productions to date.
Himalaya Films and War Films
Disagreements with his brother during the making of "Funtoosh" led Chetan Anand to establish his own production company, Himalaya Films, in 1960. In 1964, he directed one of the earliest Indian war films, "Haqeeqat" (Reality). Set in the aftermath of the Sino-Indian Border War, "Haqeeqat" won the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film.
Film Legacy
Besides his 17 feature films, Chetan Anand also directed several documentaries and the historical television series "Param Vir Chakra." He introduced notable actors, such as Rajesh Khanna, to Bollywood through his films "Aakhri Khat" (The Last Letter) and "Heer Raanjha."
Personal Life
Chetan Anand was married to Uma Anand (née Chatterjee), his childhood friend. Uma appeared as an actress and screenwriter in several of his early films. They had two sons, Ketan and Vivek. In 1964, Uma left Chetan Anand for theater producer and art collector Ebrahim Alkazi. The custody of their children remained with their father. From 1967, Chetan Anand was in a relationship with actress Priya Rajvansh, who debuted in his film "Haqeeqat." Their relationship lasted until his death.
