Biography of Chingiz Abdullayev

Chingiz Abdullayev is a Soviet and Azerbaijani writer, as well as a lawyer. He comes from a long line of lawyers, with his great-grandfather serving as an assistant to a sworn attorney in Baku in the early 1890s. His father, Akif Abdullayevich Abdullayev, was a lawyer by profession and also a participant in the Great Patriotic War. He served as a lieutenant in the counterintelligence organs of SMERSH and later worked as a prosecutor in various districts of the Azerbaijan SSR. He also held positions as a prosecutor in the Nakhchivan ASSR and as a deputy prosecutor in Baku. In his later years, he became the chairman of the Presidium of the Collegium of Lawyers of Azerbaijan. Chingiz Abdullayev's mother, Shafiga Damirovna Bedalova, was a historian and professor. She worked in the Komsomol and later served as the chairperson of the Azerbaijan Council of Trade Unions. For thirty years, she was the director of the Marxist-Leninist University at the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan. In her later years, she worked as a professor.

Writing Career

Chingiz Abdullayev's writing career began in the mid-1980s when he published his first book, "Blue Angels," in 1988. He became a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR and the Union of Writers of Azerbaijan in 1989. From February 7, 1989, he served as the secretary of the Union of Writers of Azerbaijan and became the vice-president of the Azerbaijan PEN Club in 1990. In June-July 1990, he was a delegate at the 32nd Congress of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan and was elected as a candidate for membership in the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan. In March 1991, he was elected as the secretary of the Board of the Union of Writers of Azerbaijan at the 9th Congress of the Union of Writers of Azerbaijan. He also held various positions, including vice-president of the Republican Society of Friendship "Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan" and secretary of the Board of the Union of Writers of Azerbaijan.

Other Involvements

In addition to his writing career, Chingiz Abdullayev has been involved in various organizations and initiatives. He co-founded the International Foundation for Cooperation and Partnership of the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea in March 2009. From February 2010 to December 2013, he served as a member of the Commission for State Awards of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Science, Culture, and Literature. He was elected as the president of the Azerbaijan PEN Club on January 18, 2011. He has also been a member of the Coordination Council of Azerbaijanis in the World since July 2011. In 2011-2012, he worked as an executive producer for the documentary film "The Waiting" (UK, 2012). Since September 2013, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the International Foundation for Cooperation and Partnership of the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. From June 2014, he has been serving as the secretary of the Union of Writers of Azerbaijan once again. He has received various honors, including being appointed as an honorary doctor of the University of Library Studies and Information Technologies in Sofia, Bulgaria, and being elected as an honorary member of the International Alliance Azerbaijan-Ukraine on September 15, 2015.
