Zhou Tzuyu: A Taiwanese K-Pop Star
Early Life and TrainingZhou Tzuyu was born on June 14, 1999, in Tainan, Taiwan. She was discovered by talent agents from MUSE Performing Arts Workshop in 2012 and moved to South Korea to become a trainee under JYP Entertainment.
Sixteen and TWICE Debut
In 2015, Tzuyu participated in the reality show "Sixteen," where she competed to become a member of the new girl group TWICE. Despite not initially making the final lineup, she was added as a ninth member due to her popularity among viewers. TWICE debuted on October 20, 2015, with the single "Like OHH-AHH."
Success with TWICE
TWICE gained significant popularity in 2016 with the release of the single "Cheer Up," which became a hit in Korea and led to the group's first Daesang award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards. The group has continued to release successful singles and albums, establishing themselves as one of the most popular girl groups in K-pop.
Education and Graduation
In 2016, Tzuyu enrolled in Hanlim Multi Art School alongside fellow TWICE members Chaeyoung and Dahyun. She graduated from the school on February 12, 2019, with Chaeyoung.
The Flag Incident
In November 2015, Tzuyu caused controversy by appearing on a TV show where she held the flag of the Republic of China (Taiwan) next to the flag of South Korea. This led to backlash in China, and Tzuyu was forced to issue an apology video on January 15, 2016, which sparked further outrage in Taiwan.
Personal Life and Philanthropy
Outside of TWICE, Tzuyu is known for her charitable work. She has participated in various donation campaigns and made personal contributions to organizations supporting typhoon victims. She is also an ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme.
