Chris Metzen: Renowned Game Designer and Creative Visionary

Early Career and Blizzard Entertainment

Chris Metzen, renowned American game designer, artist, and voice actor, began his career in 1994 at Blizzard Entertainment. Initially hired as an animator and artist, Metzen quickly became an integral part of the company's creative team, working on the iconic Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft franchises.

Shaping the Warcraft Universe

Metzen's role in the Warcraft series grew significantly with the release of Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness in 1995. He played a pivotal role in developing the game's fictional universe, crafting its intricate storylines and missions. His contributions to the Warcraft series continued with Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos in 2002, where he served as creative director.

Diablo and StarCraft: Expanding Narrative Horizons

In 1996, Blizzard Entertainment launched its highly successful action role-playing game, Diablo. Metzen co-created the game's dark and sinister universe with fellow designer Bill Roper. He also voiced several characters in the game.

In 1998, Metzen took on the role of lead designer for the groundbreaking sci-fi strategy game StarCraft. Together with James Phinney, he devised an expansive narrative and storyline, orchestrating the game's voice cast. Metzen's contributions extended beyond gameplay, as he also authored a StarCraft short story in collaboration with Blizzard Entertainment co-founder Sam Moore in 1999.

Literary Pursuits and Beyond

Continuing his creative endeavors, Metzen published a Warcraft novel titled "Of Blood and Honor" in 2001. In 2005, he announced the launch of an independent graphic novel series, Soldier:76, set in a dystopian American Civil War.

Metzen collaborated with Flint Dille and artist Livio Ramondelli to create the Transformers: Autocracy comic book series, published by IDW Publishing in 2012. The series explored the Transformers' history on the eve of World War I.

Warchief Gaming and Blizzard Entertainment Return

In 2020, Metzen founded Warchief Gaming, a tabletop game development company, with Mike Gilmartin and Ryan Collins. Seeking to recapture the collaborative spirit of Blizzard Entertainment's early days, they crafted tabletop games that resonated with players.

In December 2022, Metzen returned to Blizzard Entertainment as a creative consultant for the Warcraft leadership team.

Personal Life and Influences

Metzen is a self-proclaimed "comic book geek," citing his passion for comics since childhood. He credits the Dragonlance and Star Wars novel series as major influences on his work. Artists such as Walt Simonson, Jim Lee, Larry Elmore, and Keith Parkinson have shaped his unique artistic style.

Metzen also enjoys pop and rock music, nightlife, and dirt biking. In 2013, he married his longtime partner, Kat Hunter, a licensing project manager at Blizzard Entertainment.
