Biography of Chrissie Hynde
Chrissie Hynde is an American rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist, best known as the leader and sole constant member of the band "The Pretenders". She is also known for her distinctive contralto voice. Hynde currently resides in London and also has an apartment in her hometown of Akron.
Early Life and Musical Influences
During her school years, Hynde was not very popular and found solace in attending concerts. From a young age, she was a passionate fan of musicians such as Brian Jones and Iggy Pop. She briefly embraced the hippie subculture, Eastern mysticism, and vegetarianism. While studying at the School of Art at Kent State University, Hynde joined the band "Sat. Sun. Mat." Interestingly, she was on campus during the infamous "Kent State shootings" and personally knew one of the victims.
Early Career
After trying various professions, including architecture, Hynde met rock journalist Nick Kent and began working at the popular music magazine "NME". However, her tenure there was short-lived. She then worked as a saleswoman in a clothing store and attempted to create her own band, but without success. After a year of living in France, she tried again and eventually found her calling when she met Steve Strange and Sue Catwoman. With their help, she recorded a song that caught the attention of producer Dave Hill. Soon after, "The Pretenders" was formed.
The Pretenders
Initially, The Pretenders consisted of Chrissie Hynde, Pete Farndon (bassist and vocalist), James Honeyman-Scott (guitarist, vocalist, and keyboardist), and Martin Chambers (drummer and vocalist). While the lineup of the band changed over time, Hynde remained a constant member. The band released their first single in January 1979, which entered the "Top Thirty" charts in the UK. A series of successful concerts followed, and in the spring of the same year, their debut album "The Pretenders" was released. The song "Brass in Pocket" became a hit in both the UK and the US. While subsequent albums were not as commercially successful, the band remained popular.
Later Years
In 2007, Hynde opened a vegan restaurant in Akron, where exclusively Italian vegetarian food was served. Despite the ups and downs of her career, she has remained a prominent figure in the rock music industry, known for her unique voice and songwriting talent.
