Early Life and Academic Pursuits

Born on September 16, 1786, in Chemnitz, Illgen embarked on his theological studies at the University of Leipzig. In 1814, he successfully completed his habilitation, a formal qualification necessary for academic lecturing.

Professorship and Decanal Leadership

Illgen's academic career flourished as he became a docent in philosophy in 1818 and subsequently in theology after a few years. In 1823, he was appointed professor of theology at the University of Leipzig. A testament to his academic influence, he served as the dean of the theological faculty four times (1830/31, 1833/34, 1837/38, 1841/42).

Historical Theology and Academic Societies

Beyond his teaching responsibilities, Illgen was instrumental in establishing the Historisch-theologische Gesellschaft zu Leipzig in 1814, a society dedicated to the study of historical theology. He also played a significant role as the editor of the renowned periodical "Zeitschrift für Historische Theologie" ("Journal of Historical Theology") from 1832 onwards.
