Early Life and Family

Born in Teaneck, New Jersey, Christina McHale is the daughter of John McHale, an Irishman, and Margarita, a Cuban. From ages 3 to 8, she resided in Hong Kong with her family and gained some proficiency in Mandarin. In 2000, the McHales returned to the United States and settled in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.

Tennis Journey

At 15, McHale left home to attend the United States Tennis Association (USTA) training center in Boca Raton, Florida. She continues to train under USTA coaches, although her training location has since shifted to Carson, California.

Grand Slam Debuts

In 2009, McHale earned a wildcard into the main draw of the Australian Open. She lost in the opening round to Jessica Moore. She also received a wildcard into the US Open that year, where she defeated Polona Hercog in the first round before falling to Maria Sharapova in the second.

Breakthrough at Kennedy Funding Invitational

In 2010, McHale defeated Melanie Oudin and Victoria Azarenka to win the Kennedy Funding Invitational Tournament. She received $40,000 in prize money, while the tournament raised $475,000 for breast cancer research.

WTA Breakthroughs

McHale reached her first WTA quarterfinal at the Family Circle Cup. She reached the second round of Wimbledon, where she defeated Ekaterina Makarova. She also earned a notable victory over then-world number one Caroline Wozniacki at the Western & Southern Open.

Current Ranking and Achievements

As of this writing, Christina McHale ranks 66th in the WTA singles rankings and 231st in the doubles rankings. She has won one ITF tournament, earning $50,000 in prize money.
