Biography of Christine Brewer

Christine Brewer, an American opera singer and soprano, was born in 1955 and grew up in Grand Tower, Illinois. She studied music at McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois. After completing her education, Brewer taught music for several years before deciding to pursue her own performing career.

Early Career

Brewer's career began in St. Louis, Missouri, where she sang in the Saint Louis Symphony Chorus. From 1981, she performed with the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and started appearing on the opera stage in solo roles. In 1989, Brewer, who had received a masterclass from Birgit Nilsson, became one of the ten winners of the National Council auditions, funded by the Metropolitan Opera.

She performed the role of Isolde in Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" and the lead role in Beethoven's "Fidelio." Brewer is a frequent guest at the BBC Proms and performs at Wigmore Street in London, UK.

Brewer and her husband, Ross, reside in Illinois, while their daughter Elisabeth works in the social sector in Chicago. Despite her busy schedule, Brewer still finds time to work as a music educator.

In 2009, Brewer had to take a pause and even interrupt her performances at the Metropolitan Opera due to a knee injury she sustained from slipping on the street. The treatment required surgery and several months of rehabilitation.
