Johann Baptist Alxinger: German Poet and Jurist

Johann Baptist Alxinger, a notable German poet and jurist, was born on January 24, 1755, in Vienna, Austria.

Early Life and Education

Alxinger pursued a legal education and eventually served as a court agent. However, he used his position to provide pro bono services to the less fortunate.

Literary Career

In 1794, Alxinger was appointed secretary of the court theater and granted knighthood. His literary works, including "Gedichte" (1780-88), showcased freethinking ideas and elegant form.

Major Poetic Works

Alxinger's most renowned works were the epic poems "Doolin von Mainz" (1787) and "Bliomberis" (1791). These works demonstrated his admiration for Wieland's style, but they have since become outdated and fail to meet contemporary standards.

Death and Legacy

Alxinger passed away on May 1, 1797. His literary corpus was published in ten volumes as "A.'s 'Sämtliche Schriften'" (1812). While his works enjoyed popularity during his lifetime, they gradually faded into obscurity. Despite their historical significance, Alxinger's poems have not retained their relevance in modern literature.
