Early Life and CareerChristopher Friedrich Bretzner was born on December 10, 1748, in Leipzig, Germany. He initially worked as a merchant but later pursued his passion for literature.
Contribution to Opera
Bretzner's most notable work was his play "Belmont and Constance, or The Abduction from the Seraglio." This play became the basis for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera "The Abduction from the Seraglio" (1782). However, Bretzner vehemently objected to Mozart's adaptation, as it was based on a revised version of the play by J. G. Stephanie.
Other Works and Legacy
Beyond "Belmont and Constance," Bretzner wrote other works, including the libretto for the opera "The Apple Thief, or The Treasure Seeker" ("Der Äpfeldieb oder Der Schatzgräber"). This libretto was set to music by composer Anton Franz Kaf́ka in 1780.
Bretzner passed away tragically during a theater performance, underscoring his dedication to the dramatic arts. His contributions to opera literature continue to be acknowledged and appreciated.
