Early Life and Education
Christoph Waltz was born on October 4, 1956, in Vienna, Austria. His parents were stage designers, and his family has a long history of involvement in theater. Waltz attended the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna and the Lee Strasberg Institute in New York City.
Theater and Television Career
Waltz began his acting career on stage in 1982 in Zurich. He performed at the Schauspielhaus Zurich, the Burgtheater in Vienna, and the Salzburg Festival. He also made frequent appearances on television, including roles in "Tatort" and "Inspector Rex."
Film Breakthrough: "Inglourious Basterds"
Waltz's breakthrough film role came in 2009 when he played SS Colonel Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds." His performance earned him the award for Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. He went on to win an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actor.
