Christopher Gunnell and Kathleen

Christopher Gunnell, a 64-year-old father of six, received the devastating diagnosis of lung cancer in April 2015. His health took a sudden turn for the worse in January 2016, leading to his admission to the hospital.

Despite their plans for an elaborate wedding ceremony in April 2016, Christopher and his beloved Kathleen, a 62-year-old mother of two from a previous relationship, were forced to postpone their nuptials. However, fate had other plans. With just 24 hours' notice, their wedding ceremony was hastily organized at the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford, England.

An Impromptu Wedding

The small ward of the hospital served as the backdrop for the improvised ceremony, attended by over 30 guests. Christopher's dream was realized that day, and he expressed his joy, saying, "This is a wonderful moment, something I will treasure forever."

Kathleen shared her sentiments, saying, "We had been thinking about getting married for a long time but kept putting it off for other family commitments. We had a venue booked for April 2016, the hotel was booked, and the rings had been bought. But Christopher was admitted to the hospital, and on the weekend the doctor advised us to have the wedding sooner."

A Love Story

Christopher and Kathleen met eight years prior through family connections. When Christopher received his diagnosis, he had already booked the venue and purchased the rings for their wedding. However, his deteriorating health led to his hospitalization on January 2nd.

Doctors cautioned that his prognosis was grim and advised them to move up their wedding date. Initially, there were concerns that Christopher's condition might prevent him from participating in the ceremony. However, by January 5th, his health had improved.

Hospital Collaboration

Within a day and a half, hospital staff and the couple's family members worked tirelessly to prepare for the special occasion. The Fountain Centre, a Surrey-based independent cancer support organization, generously provided a room for the ceremony and reception.

As Christopher was unable to leave the hospital, the medical staff went above and beyond to make the wedding as memorable as possible. The couple expressed their gratitude by organizing a fundraiser for the hospital charity.

A Memorable Celebration

Hospital spokesperson Samantha Gibbons described the atmosphere during the wedding as one of "tears of joy." "It was a beautiful day, even though it wasn't the venue or circumstances they had originally planned," she said.
