Christopher Michael Hewett, an English stage and film actor and theater director, was born in 1922 in Worthing, Sussex, United Kingdom. He came from a military family, with his father being an army officer and his mother being Irish.

Early Life and Career

Christopher's first introduction to the stage was at the age of 7 when he participated in a production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in Dublin. At the age of 16, he joined the Royal Air Force (RAF), and by the age of 18, he left the military and joined the Oxford Repertory Company as an actor.

In 1943, he made his debut on the West End Theatre stage in London. Later, Hewett also appeared on Broadway, starring in the musical "My Fair Lady." He continued working in musical productions such as "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," "Music Is," and "Kean." Hewett's performance in "Music Is" earned him a nomination for the Drama Desk Award in 1977.

Film and Television Career

Hewett made his film debut in 1951 in the British drama "Pool of London" directed by Basil Dearden. In the same year, he appeared as Inspector Talbot in the crime comedy "The Lavender Hill Mob," which won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. In 1968, Hewett became part of another Academy Award-winning film, Mel Brooks' comedy "The Producers."

Throughout the 1960s, Hewett successfully performed on Broadway in productions such as "The Affair" and "Hadrian VII." He also appeared in several television series, including "Fantasy Island," "Hart to Hart," "Murder, She Wrote," and "Mr. Belvedere," where he portrayed the titular character, Mr. Belvedere. He gained significant popularity and recognition for his role in "Mr. Belvedere" and received a nomination for the TV Land Award.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Hewett continued his Broadway career with plays such as "Sleuth," "No Sex Please, We're British" (where he also served as a director), "Trelawny of the 'Wells'," and the musical production "Music Is" and "Peter Pan." His last television appearance was in the series "California Dreams" in 1994. However, in 1997, he made a cameo appearance in an episode of "Ned & Stacey."

Personal Life and Legacy

Christopher Hewett passed away on August 3, 2001, at the age of 79 due to complications related to diabetes. He was known for his devout Catholic faith and served at St. Victor's Church in West Hollywood. Hewett did not have any children throughout his life.
