Chuck Taylor was born on June 24, 1901, in Azalia, Indiana. Around the same time, the 'Converse Rubber Shoe Company' was founded in Massachusetts by Marquis Mills Converse, after whom the company was named. The company's main product line consisted of athletic shoes designed for basketball, football, and tennis. Unfortunately, the initial model created by the company was not perfect. The sneakers did not provide a secure fit and were not suitable for long training sessions as they caused blisters.

In school, Chuck Taylor quickly became a star in his school basketball team. In high school, he set his sights on playing for professional teams at the national level. However, his plans took a sharp turn in 1921 when he, frustrated with the sneaker problems, visited the 'Converse' office in Chicago to suggest improvements. He left the office as an employee, as the founders had big plans for him.
