Early Life and Military Education

John Jacob was born in 1859 in the princely state of Bombay, British India. His father was a major-general in the Indian Army. After attending school in Dorset, England, Jacob graduated from the Royal Military College.

Military Service in India

In 1882, Jacob was commissioned into the Worcestershire Regiment. He spent most of his military career in British India, serving in the Northwest Frontier Province and Quetta. He participated in skirmishes with Afghan and Pathan tribes and in colonial expeditions to suppress nationalist movements.

Formation of the Frontier Corps

Around 1910, Jacob formed the Frontier Corps, a separate paramilitary force composed of local tribesmen. He became the Chief of Staff of the Meerut Division in 1912.

World War I

With the outbreak of World War I, the Meerut Division joined the Indian Expeditionary Force and fought in France. Jacob distinguished himself in combat, earning the rank of brigadier and then divisional commander.

Transfer to the British Army

In 1915, the Indian Expeditionary Force was withdrawn from the Western Front. Jacob was offered a transfer to the British Army due to his exceptional abilities. He commanded the 21st Infantry Division and then the 2nd British Army Corps, participating in major battles such as the Battle of the Somme and the Spring Offensive.

Post-War Career

After the war, Jacob commanded a corps in the Allied occupation of the Rhineland. He returned to India in 1920 as Chief of the General Staff and was promoted to general the following year. In 1924, he became Commander-in-Chief of the Northern Command.

Final Years

Jacob was appointed acting Commander-in-Chief in India in 1925 but was not permanently confirmed. He was recalled to England and appointed Chief of Military Operations at the India Office. In 1926, he was promoted to field marshal. He retired in 1930 and passed away in 1944.
