Early Life and Education
Claudius Dornier was born on May 14, 1884 in Kempten, Germany. He completed his studies at the Technical University of Munich in 1907.
Aeronautical Career
Dornier joined the research department of Ferdinand von Zeppelin's airship company in 1910. In 1914, he founded his own aviation company in Friedrichshafen.
Pioneering All-Metal Aircraft
Dornier revolutionized aircraft design by creating the all-metal flying boat. His models, such as the "Wal," Do-18, Do-24, and Do-26, were widely used for passenger transportation on South and North Atlantic routes before World War II.
Giant Flying Boats
In 1929, Dornier constructed the massive 12-engine flying boat, the Do-X. With a takeoff weight exceeding 50 tons and a capacity for 170 passengers, it was one of the largest aircraft of its time.
Wartime Bombers
Prior to World War II, Dornier developed the medium bomber Do-17. Later, he upgraded it into the Do-217, which saw action during the conflict.
Post-War Era
After World War II, Dornier's company focused on manufacturing aircraft for private use. In 1962, Dornier stepped down from leadership of the company and moved to Switzerland. He passed away in Zug, Switzerland on December 5, 1969.
