Early Life and Education

Konstantin Alexeyevich Kalinin was born in Warsaw on May 8, 1886, to a military family. His father was a sergeant major who later became a titular adviser. His mother, a peasant's daughter, played a significant role in his upbringing and education. Kalinin received a solid education at a home school, then at a real school, and finally at a teacher's seminary, where he graduated with honors.

Military Career and Interest in Aviation

In 1907, after the death of his mother, Kalinin joined the 184th Warsaw Infantry Regiment. In 1909, he passed exams with distinction to enter the Odessa Military School. As a cadet, he became acquainted with aeronautics and witnessed the first airplane flights in Russia. It was likely at this point that he decided to pursue a career in aviation.

Service on the Far Eastern Front

In 1912, Kalinin graduated from the Odessa Military School and was assigned to Vladivostok. In December 1913, he was transferred to a unit located on an island near Vladivostok, where he studied aviation literature. In February 1914, he participated in flights conducted by the local aviation detachment.

World War I and Military Aviation Training

With the outbreak of World War I in July 1914, Kalinin was transferred to Kronstadt and assigned to an artillery unit. In March 1915, he became an adjutant to the Chief of Staff of the artillery division. In August of the same year, he was promoted to lieutenant and distinguished himself in battle near Dvinsk, earning the Order of St. Stanislaus.

From March 1916, Kalinin attended the Gatchina Military Aviation School. He completed theoretical courses at the Petrograd Polytechnic Institute and the Lebedev Aviation Factory. In May, he began flying and made his first solo flight on June 25th. He mastered various aircraft models, including the Farman-7 biplane and the Voisin combat aircraft.

Service on the Romanian Front and Command Role

In October 1916, Kalinin became a military pilot in the 26th Corps Aviation Detachment on the Romanian Front. In November, he was appointed quartermaster of the detachment, and in December, he became the acting commander. After a combat mission where he was concussed, he was awarded the Order of St. Anna and confirmed as the commander of the detachment. He successfully bombed a bridge over the Bystrica River and was the first in his unit to use radio communication to adjust artillery fire.

Post-Revolution and Ukrainian Service

After the October Revolution of 1917, Kalinin withdrew his detachment to the east. In December 1918, he was appointed commander of the 1st Volyn Aviation Division of the Ukrainian People's Army. He later became a captain and, in January 1919, inspector of the Kiev District.

Arrest and Execution

In October 1938, seven months after his arrest, Kalinin was executed by firing squad in the Voronezh NKVD prison. The charges against him were standard for the period of 1937-1938: "anti-Soviet activity and espionage." The closed trial by the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court lasted only ten minutes, with no defense attorney or witnesses present. The sentence was carried out immediately after the trial.
