Claúdio Pinho was a legendary Brazilian footballer who made an indelible mark on the sport. With his prolific goal-scoring abilities and unwavering dedication, he etched his name into the annals of football history.
Early Career at Santos and Palestra Italia
Claúdio began his professional career in 1940 with Santos FC, where he spent two seasons. He then made the move to Palestra Italia (later renamed Palmeiras) in 1942, but struggled to adapt to the new environment in São Paulo. Nevertheless, he left a lasting legacy by scoring the first goal for the club under its new name.
Return to Santos and Emergence at Corinthians
In 1943, Claúdio returned to Santos and played for two more years before joining Corinthians in 1945. It was at Corinthians where he truly flourished, establishing himself as a right-winger with an exceptional scoring prowess. Over the next 12 years, he captained the team and became their all-time leading goalscorer with an astonishing 295 goals in 549 matches.
International Career and Back to Santos
Claúdio made his debut for the Brazilian national team in 1942 and represented his country in four South American Championships, including Brazil's victory in 1949. However, he missed out on the 1950 FIFA World Cup due to injury. After a brief spell at Corinthians as a coach, Claúdio resumed his playing career with São Paulo in 1959.
Retirement and Legacy
Claúdio retired in 1957 but made a brief comeback with São Paulo. He passed away in 2001 at the age of 77 due to a heart attack. A bust of Claúdio stands proudly in Parque São Jorge, where the Corinthians stadium is located, as a testament to his immense contributions to the club.
