Clem Burke: Drummer of the Iconic Band Blondie
Early Life and Joining BlondieClement Bozewski, known as Clem Burke, was born on November 24, 1954, in Bayonne, New Jersey. In 1975, at the age of 18, he joined the newly formed rock band Blondie, alongside Chris Stein (guitar) and Debbie Harry (vocals). The band completed its initial lineup with keyboardist Jimmy Destri in the same year.
Blondie's Rise to Success
Blondie quickly gained recognition in the New York underground music scene, influenced by venues like CBGB and Max's Kansas City. Their debut album, "Blondie," was released in 1977 and was well-received. The band embarked on successful tours, supported by Iggy Pop and David Bowie.
In 1977, Blondie released their second album, "Plastic Letters," and toured extensively in Europe and Asia. They worked with producer Mike Chapman to create a more radio-friendly sound for their third album, "Parallel Lines," which was released in 1978.
Continued Success and Disbandment
Blondie continued to release hit albums throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, including "Eat to the Beat" (1979) and "Autoamerican" (1980). Their single "Call Me" from "Autoamerican" became a worldwide hit and was featured in the film "American Gigolo."
In 1982, Blondie released their final album before their first breakup, "The Hunter." Shortly after, Chris Stein departed the band due to a rare genetic disorder, leading to the group's dissolution.
Post-Blondie Career
During the 1980s and 1990s, Clem Burke collaborated with numerous artists and bands, including The Romantics (as their permanent drummer from 1990 to 2004), Pete Townshend, Bob Dylan, Eurythmics, Iggy Pop, and Joan Jett.
Blondie's Reunion
In the late 1990s, Blondie reunited and Clem Burke returned to his role as drummer. The band has since released several new albums and embarked on extensive tours.
Current Projects
In addition to his work with Blondie, Clem Burke currently plays in the bands Slinky Vagabond (with Earl Slick, Glen Matlock, and Keanan Duffty) and Magic Christian (with Cyril Jordan and Eddie Munoz).
