Nicolaes Witsen's Diplomatic Mission to Russia
The Dutch MerchantIn 1675, Dutch merchant Nicolaes Witsen embarked on a diplomatic mission to Russia on behalf of the States General and Prince William III of Orange. Witsen's primary objective was to negotiate a defensive and offensive alliance with Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich.
Moscow Negotiations
Witsen arrived in Moscow during Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich's reign, but his negotiations were delayed due to the tsar's untimely death. Instead, Witsen had to navigate discussions with the advisors of Alexei's son and successor, Tsar Fyodor III.
Unfulfilled Mission
Despite failing to secure a formal alliance, Witsen's mission proved successful in establishing trade relations with eastern countries. His retinue of 53 individuals included prominent figures such as writer Adam Bessels and Balthasar Coyett, son of Frederik Coyett.
Coyett's Account
Balthasar Coyett penned a fascinating account of the embassy's experiences in Russia, titled "Voyagie van den Heere K. v. Klenk." Published in Amsterdam in 1677, it provides a valuable insight into the diplomatic mission and the interaction between the Dutch delegation and Russian society.
