Early Life and Education

Konrad was born into a landowner's family in East Prussia, Germany. He initially pursued agriculture at the Danzig gymnasium but was forced to abandon it due to health reasons. He then transitioned to natural sciences at the University of Berlin but later switched to political disciplines at the University of Jena in 1862.

Academic Career

Konrad earned his doctorate in 1864 and his habilitation in 1868. From 1870, he taught at the University of Jena and from 1872 until his passing, he held a professorship at the University of Halle.

Publications and Research

Konrad edited the "Sammlung nationalökonomischer und statistischer Abhandlungen" from 1877 onwards. He published his own research in this collection, including investigations on the influence of socioeconomic factors on mortality and the evolution of university studies in Germany.

Collaborative Work

In collaboration with Wilhelm Lexis, Elster, and Löning, Konrad co-edited the comprehensive "Handwörterbuch der Staatswissenschaften," a multi-volume encyclopedia of social and political sciences published between 1889 and 1894.
