Early Life and Ascension

Birth and Family:

Symbatios, later known as Constantine, was born between 800 and 810 as the eldest son of Leo V the Armenian and Theophano.

Imperial Patronage:

Emperor Michael I Rangabe likely acted as Symbatios' godfather, signaling the child's potential for imperial favor.

Co-Emperor with Leo V

Ascension to Throne:

In 813, Leo V deposed Michael I and assumed the throne. Symbatios, now renamed Constantine, was proclaimed as his co-emperor.

Presidency of Iconoclast Council:

In 815, Constantine nominally presided over the Council of Constantinople as his father's representative, which reinstated the ban on the veneration of icons.

Fall and Exile

Murder of Leo V:

On December 25, 820, Leo V was assassinated. Constantine, along with his mother and brothers, was exiled to Prinkipo Island (modern Kinaliada).

Life as Monks:

On the island, Constantine and his siblings were forced into monasticism. Emperor Michael II the Stammerer allowed them to retain some income from their confiscated estates for their personal maintenance and attendants.
