Early Life and Career
Corinne Lepage was born on May 11, 1951, in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, into a wealthy family. She studied at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris and graduated with a DES in public law and political science, as well as a law degree.
In 1975, Lepage became a lawyer and partnered with Christian Jullien, who founded an environmental law firm in 1969. Lepage became known for her role in the Amoco Cadiz supertanker disaster case in 1978.
Political Career
In 1981, Lepage entered politics. She won her first municipal election in Cabourg in 1989, becoming deputy mayor and later first deputy mayor in 1995. She helped found the Ecological Generation party.
From 1995 to 1997, Lepage served as Minister of the Environment in the government of Alain Juppé. She successfully passed a law on air pollution control in 1996 and became the leader of the environmental party Cap21, later reorganized as the Civil Movement - Cap21.
Presidential Candidate and MEP
In 2002, Lepage ran for President of France for her party, receiving 1.88% of the vote. From 2009 to 2014, she was a Member of the European Parliament for the North-West constituency of France, part of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe group.
Lawsuits and Controversies
In 2019, Lepage filed a defamation lawsuit against François Bayrou, the leader of the Democratic Movement. Bayrou had accused Lepage of misleading coastal town mayors after the Amoco Cadiz tanker crash in the 1970s.
