Cornel Codreanu: Founder of the Iron Guard
Early Life and EducationCornel Codreanu was born in Bukovina, Romania, in 1899 to a family of German and Polish descent. He attended military school from 1912-1916 before enrolling in law school at the University of Iași, where he led protests against the removal of mandatory religious services from the curriculum.
Military Career and Nationalistic Views
Codreanu's military experience included serving in the Romanian Army during the First World War and later as a member of the National Consciousness Guard. These experiences shaped his anti-communist and nationalist beliefs.
Founding the Iron Guard
In 1924, Codreanu founded the anti-communist organization the "Legion of the Archangel Michael," also known as the "Iron Guard." The Iron Guard promoted Romanian nationalism and the revival of the Orthodox monarchy. As the organization grew, it became increasingly militant and engaged in political violence.
Political Career
Codreanu was elected to the Romanian Parliament in 1931. His growing influence alarmed King Carol II, who ordered his arrest in 1938.
Assassination
On November 30, 1938, Codreanu and several other Iron Guard members were assassinated by order of the king under the pretense of an attempted escape. Horia Sima succeeded Codreanu as leader of the Iron Guard.
Legacy
During the National Legionary State (1940-1941), Codreanu became a cult figure. However, his memory faded after the Iron Guard was banned and its revolt was suppressed.
