Biography of Alexander Yakovenko

Alexander Yakovenko is a Ukrainian political figure, a candidate for the presidency of Ukraine in 2004, the head of the Communist Party of Workers and Peasants, as well as a historian and economist. He was born on August 25, 1952, in the city of Yenakiyevo in the Donetsk region.

Early Life and Career

After serving in the army in 1972, Alexander Yakovenko worked as an electrician in the blast furnace shop of the Yenakiyevo Metallurgical Plant for three years. From 1974 to 1977, he served as a pioneer leader at the Artek camp. He then spent a year as the secretary of one of the Komsomol organizations in Yalta. Following this, he worked as the head of the Yenakiyevo branch of the Donetsk Local History Museum for three years.

In 1991, while still holding his position at the museum, Yakovenko also managed the agricultural enterprise "Nucleus". In the summer of 1993, the Communist Party of Ukraine (CPU) was revived in Donetsk, and Yakovenko quickly joined the party. Less than a year later, he was elected as a People's Deputy of Ukraine from the Yenakiyevo single-mandate electoral district (No. 124) on the spring elections to the Verkhovna Rada, representing the CPU.

Political Career

After four years, Yakovenko became a Ukrainian parliamentarian for the second time, this time representing the single-mandate electoral district No. 50. Soon after, he had a conflict with the party leadership of the CPU, leading to the foundation of the Communist Party of Workers and Peasants on March 17, 2001, of which he became the head.

In the parliamentary elections of 2002, Yakovenko ran as number 2 on the electoral list of his party. However, as the party did not overcome the four percent barrier, he did not become a deputy for the third time.

Presidential Election of 2004 and Later Years

On October 31, 2004, Alexander Yakovenko participated in the presidential elections in Ukraine, receiving votes from 218,214 voters (0.78% of the votes, seventh place out of 24 candidates). After his defeat in the elections, Yakovenko faded into the background of Ukrainian politics.

Apart from his political career, Alexander Yakovenko also completed his studies at the Kostroma Pedagogical Institute and Donetsk State University.
