Courtney Baker, a loving mother from Sanford, Florida, wrote a heartbreaking letter to a doctor who advised her to have an abortion when she was pregnant with her one-year-old daughter, Emerson Faith, who has Down syndrome. Despite the doctor's insistence that her daughter would have a "terrible life," Courtney chose to bring Emerson into the world. A Message of Perfection
Courtney asked Parker Myles, an advocate for individuals with Down syndrome, to share a series of stunning photos of Emerson on Facebook, disproving the doctor's belief that her daughter's life would be anything but perfect. In the letter, Courtney recounted a recent incident involving her pregnant friend, whose prenatal specialist always emphasized that her unborn son was "perfect" when looking at ultrasounds. However, when the baby was born with Down syndrome, the same doctor looked at the newborn and declared, "I told you. He's perfect." This story deeply affected Courtney, both for the support her friend received and the lack of understanding and compassion shown by her own doctor.
A Mother's Plea
In her letter, Courtney expressed her gratitude to her friend for sharing that powerful story, but also her deep sorrow that her own doctor not only failed to provide any support but actively opposed her decision to keep her baby. Courtney wrote, "I came to you in the darkest time of my life. I was terrified, anxious, and full of despair. I didn't yet know the full truth about my child, so I desperately needed your support. Instead of support and encouragement, you offered me the choice to get rid of my baby." Even after Courtney explained that she would not take such a devastating step and had already chosen a name for her daughter, the doctor questioned whether she and her partner were prepared to accept the "low quality of life" of a child with Down syndrome. Courtney shared how she and her partner started fearing subsequent visits to the doctor, and how the most challenging time in her life became almost unbearable because the doctor never told her the truth: "My child is perfect."
An Enriched Life
Courtney, who has two older daughters, Ryan (15) and Evynn (11), insists that Emerson has enriched their lives, helped them reevaluate their family values, brought immeasurable joy, and touched the hearts of thousands. She prays that doctors will now see the true beauty and pure love in every ultrasound of a developing child with Down syndrome and will remember her story when speaking to other mothers, telling them the truth: "Your child is perfection."
A Touching Response
Thousands of Facebook users read and shared Courtney's touching message. Many praised the mother of three for her choice, while others shared similar stories of how their doctors reacted to discouraging prenatal diagnoses. Courtney revealed to ABC News that even before Emerson was born, she knew she had to write the letter to her doctor. It took over a year to compose and send the letter, but Courtney believes that the process itself was therapeutic for her. She said, "Every step, from opening and closing the mailbox to raising the red flag, helped me put the final pieces together. I have no idea how the doctor reacted to my letter, but I believe that God can work miracles and touch any heart."
