Early Life and Education
Craig Philip Bierko was born on August 18, 1964, into a family of theater enthusiasts. His parents managed the Rye Theater in Rye, New York, where Craig made his stage debut at the age of ten in the play "Gypsy."
After graduating high school, Bierko attended Boston University, initially majoring in broadcast journalism. He later transferred to Northwestern University's renowned theater program, from which he ultimately graduated.
Theater and Early Television Appearances
In the late 1980s, Bierko moved to Los Angeles and joined the touring company of "The Boys From Syracuse," starring alongside Carol Burnett and Carol Channing. He also made his television debut in the 1987 educational film "The Day My Kid Went Punk."
Breakthrough and Early Film Roles
Bierko signed a three-year contract with NBC in the early 1990s and appeared in the 1993 television movie "Danniele Steel's Star." His breakthrough film role, however, came in 1996 with "The Long Kiss Goodnight," where he played a complex character initially believed to be a villain.
Romantic Comedies and Thrillers
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Bierko starred in romantic comedies such as "'Til There Was You" and "Sour Grapes." He also took on leading roles in thrillers like "The Thirteenth Floor."
Broadway Success and Tony Nomination
In 2000, Bierko surprised many by taking on the iconic role of Harold Hill in the Broadway revival of "The Music Man." His interpretation of the role, while rooted in Robert Preston's original portrayal, was praised for its depth and complexity, earning him a Tony Award nomination.
Continued Film and Television Roles
Bierko continued to balance his film and television career. He had a cameo in the hit romantic comedy "Kate & Leopold" (2001) and appeared in a memorable role on "Sex and the City" as a jazz-loving love interest for Carrie Bradshaw.
In 2003, he joined the cast of the short-lived series "The Court" and later starred in the television movie "Sudden Fear." His notable film roles include "Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star" (2003) and "Cinderella Man" (2005), where he portrayed legendary boxer Max Baer.
Parodic Roles and the Near-Missed "Friends" Role
Bierko has also shown his comedic chops in parodic roles, such as his portrayal of Tom Cruise's character in "Scary Movie 4" (2006). Ironically, Bierko was initially offered the role of Chandler Bing in the sitcom "Friends" but declined, allowing Matthew Perry to take on the iconic part.
