Early Life and Education
Craig Barrett was born on August 29, 1939, in San Francisco. He graduated from Stanford University in 1964, where he later earned a Ph.D. in materials science. From 1964-65, he conducted research at the National Physical Laboratory in the United Kingdom and in 1972, he worked at the Technical University of Denmark.
Career at Intel
Barrett joined Intel in 1974 as a manager. He rose through the ranks, becoming vice president in 1984, senior vice president in 1987, and chief operating officer in 1993. In 1997, he was named president of Intel and in 1998, chief executive officer (CEO).
During his tenure, Barrett played a pivotal role in Intel's growth and success. Under his leadership, the company became the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer. He also oversaw the introduction of new technologies, including the Intel Pentium and Xeon processors.
Awards and Recognition
Barrett received numerous awards for his contributions to the technology industry. In 2010, he was awarded the President of the Republic of Armenia Prize for Global Contribution to Information Technologies. He also holds honorary doctorates from the University of California, Berkeley, and the Новосибирский государственный университет (Novosibirsk State University).
Other Roles
In addition to his work at Intel, Barrett served on the National Commission on Science and Mathematics Education for the 21st Century. He is also the co-chairman of the Skolkovo Foundation and the United Nations Committee on Development of Information and Telecommunications Technologies.
Family
Barrett is married to Barbara Barrett, who was the U.S. ambassador to Finland from 2008-2009.
