Craig R. Barrett: Intel's Fourth CEO
Early Life and EducationBorn on August 29, 1939, in San Francisco, California, Craig R. Barrett pursued his education at Stanford University, where he earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees in materials science from 1957 to 1964.
Academic Career
After completing his PhD, Dr. Barrett spent the next decade as a faculty member at Stanford's Department of Materials Science and Engineering, eventually becoming an associate professor. He also held fellowships at the National Physical Laboratory in England (1964-1965) and the Technical University of Denmark (1972).
Joining Intel
In 1974, Dr. Barrett joined Intel. He rapidly ascended through various roles, including manager of technology development, vice president (1984), senior vice president (1987), and executive vice president (1990).
Leadership at Intel
Elected to the Intel board of directors in 1992, Dr. Barrett became Chief Operating Officer in 1993. In May 1997, he assumed the role of Intel's fourth President and, in May 1998, became its Chief Executive Officer.
Recognition and Accomplishments
In 1969, Dr. Barrett received the AIME Henry Marion Howe Gold Medal. He has authored over 40 technical papers and a textbook on materials science published in the 1970s. In 1999, he was appointed to the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century.
Board Memberships
Beyond Intel, Dr. Barrett has served on the boards of the Semiconductor Industry Association, U.S. West, Inc., Sematech, and PandesicT LLC.
