Early Life and Career
David Pollock began his career as a teacher in the late 1970s at Keith Grammar School. In 1981, he became the Sports Director at Beau Soleil College in Villars, Switzerland. During his time there, he mentored a young Jacques Villeneuve, who had been sent to the school following the death of his Formula One driver father, Gilles Villeneuve.
Mentor to Villeneuve
After graduating from Beau Soleil, Villeneuve pursued a racing career, following in his father's footsteps. He joined Prema Racing in Formula 3, but struggled to achieve notable results. By chance, Pollock and Villeneuve reunited at the Suzuka Circuit. After that meeting, the duo held three further meetings in Switzerland, during which Villeneuve expressed his desire for Pollock to manage his career. Pollock agreed after their final meeting.
Formula One Success
Pollock's first move as Villeneuve's manager was to negotiate a deal with Toyota Team Tom's in Japan to facilitate Villeneuve's racing development. In 1993, Pollock arranged for Villeneuve to race in American Formula Atlantic and in the IndyCars the following year. Villeneuve's victory in the Indianapolis 500 in 1995 propelled his career into Formula One. With Pollock's guidance, Villeneuve joined Williams Racing, where he won the championship in 1997.
British American Racing (BAR)
While Villeneuve was in his final year of IndyCar, Pollock worked behind the scenes to establish a new Formula One team. After acquiring Tyrrell in 1998, Pollock led the team while simultaneously developing BAR British American Racing. However, despite Pollock's bold statements about BAR's imminent success, the team struggled in its inaugural year.
In 2000, Pollock successfully brokered Honda's return to Formula One with BAR Honda. The team achieved its best season in 2002, finishing 5th in the championship.
Post-Formula One Career
Pollock continued to manage Villeneuve until the end of his Formula One career. After leaving BAR, Pollock briefly considered but ultimately declined an offer to restore the Arrows team. He subsequently negotiated the purchase of the assets of the PacWest Cart team and competed in the CART series in 2003. Pollock also brokered the introduction of Gerald Forsythe to Kevin Kalkhoven, which ultimately led to Kalkhoven and Forsythe purchasing the CART series and Cosworth.
PURE SA and Legacy
Pollock's official business relationship with Villeneuve ended in 2008, but the two remained close. In 2011, Pollock established Propulsion Universelle et Recuperation d'Energie (PURE SA), an engineering company that sought to develop power units for Formula One. Due to financial constraints, PURE SA closed in 2014.
