Crown the Empire was founded in July 2010 by Andrew Velasquez, Austin Duncan, Brandon Hoover, and Hayden Tree, who were all students at Colleyville Heritage High School in Colleyville, Texas. Alex Massey initially served as the drummer, but was replaced by Brent Taddie in May 2011.

With the addition of Ben Vogelman on lead guitar, the band recorded their first demo track, "Lady of the Lake," featuring Hayden Tree on screams. With this lineup, they released their debut EP, "Limitless," on November 29, 2011.

Rise Records, Touring, and Debut Album (2012-2013)

On March 21, 2012, Crown the Empire signed with Rise Records. They released their debut album, "The Fallout," on November 25, 2012, with David Escamilla replacing Austin Duncan on keyboards. The album featured the singles "Makeshift Chemistry" and "The Fallout."

The Resistance: Rise of the Runaways (2014-2015)

On February 4, 2014, Crown the Empire announced that they were entering the studio to record a new album with producer Joey Sturgis. They debuted new songs, "MNSTR" and "Initiation," during the Vans Warped Tour. The album, "The Resistance: Rise of the Runaways," was released on July 22, 2014, and topped the iTunes Rock chart.

Retrograde and Escamilla's Departure (2016-2017)

Crown the Empire released their third album, "Retrograde," on July 22, 2016. The album featured a lighter sound and shared clean vocals between Andy Leo and David Escamilla. Escamilla toured with the band throughout the Warped Tour, but did not participate in the Retrograde Tour, citing an indefinite hiatus. On January 8, 2017, the band officially announced Escamilla's departure.
