Early Life and Motocross Career
Cyril Despres was born into a family with no background in motorsports. Inspired by a successful motocross rider known to his parents, he begged for monetary gifts and purchased his first 80cc motorcycle at age 13.
Dakar Rally Debut and Financial Struggles
Despres spent nearly a decade competing in motocross and enduro competitions, often having to repair his own machines, which later proved valuable in rally raids. He set his sights on the Dakar Rally but faced financial barriers. To gather funds, he worked in a motorcycle gear factory and sold wine.
Breakthrough with Honda and BMW
In 2000, Despres made his Dakar debut on a Honda and finished 16th overall, securing 2nd in the 400 cc Super Production category. The navigator of the winning car, Jean-Louis Schlesser, invited Despres to join his racing electrical company in Andorra. Soon after, BMW recruited him, alleviating his financial concerns.
KTM Dominance and Tragedy
After BMW's departure from rally raids, Despres moved to the KTM factory team. In 2003, he won three stages and finished 2nd overall behind Richard Sainct, also claiming the World Rally Raid Championship. In 2005, Despres won the Dakar Rally after Sainct's tragic death and Mеоni's fatal accident during the event.
Rivalry with Marc Coma
Over the next several years, Despres faced stiff competition from Marc Coma, who eventually dethroned him in 2006. In 2007, Despres regained victory after Coma crashed out two days before the finish. Coma reclaimed the title in 2009, but Despres reasserted his dominance in 2010.
Dakar Victories and Personal Life
In 2012 and 2013, Despres secured consecutive Dakar Rally victories. In 2010, he became a father to a daughter named Gina. He resides primarily in Andorra but maintains strong ties to France. Despres enjoys skiing, quad biking, and is an avid rugby enthusiast, supporting the Perpignan club and befriending former French captain Christian Califano.
