Cyrus Vance Jr., an American lawyer, has achieved impressive results in politics, primarily in the military field, while working with a number of presidents. He is the son of Cyrus Vance Sr., who served as the Secretary of the Army under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, Deputy Secretary of Defense under President Johnson, and Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter.

Growing up in New York City, Cyrus Vance Jr. followed in his father's footsteps, aspiring to at least replicate his father's success, if not surpass it. He attended Yale University after completing high school and obtained a law degree from Georgetown University in 1982. While still a law student, Cyrus actively participated in campaigns to support Senator Gary Hart from Colorado.

After graduating from university, Vance joined the office of the Manhattan District Attorney, where he held the position of Assistant District Attorney. He handled high-profile cases and investigations, including murders, organized crime, corruption, international art fraud, and more. Additionally, Vance was actively involved in various political matters and issues related to sentencing, guilt awareness, and the organization of fair and just legal decisions.

In 1989, Vance moved to Seattle, Washington, and only returned to New York in 2005. According to Vance himself, he relocated to start his own career and step out of his father's shadow. In 1995, Cyrus Vance Jr. became one of the founders of the law firm McNaul Ebel Nawrot Helgren & Vance. He also worked as an adjunct professor at the School of Law at the University of Seattle. Upon his return to New York, Vance joined the law firm Morvillo, Abramowitz, Grand, Isaon, Anello & Bohrer, P.C.

In 2009, Vance announced his intention to run for the position of Manhattan District Attorney. He stated that he would only pursue this role after the retirement of the incumbent District Attorney, Robert Morgenthau. Just ten days after Morgenthau's official announcement, Vance put forth his candidacy for the vacant position. Morgenthau himself acknowledged Vance as an excellent candidate and a worthy professional. Vance competed against Leslie Crocker Snyder and Richard Aborn in the party primaries and emerged victorious on November 3, 2009, with 91% of the votes. He officially assumed office on January 1, 2010.

During his early months in office, Vance reorganized several bureaus and divisions to modernize the operations of the District Attorney's Office. Notable successful cases under Vance's leadership include the conviction of a serial rapist sentenced to 428 years in prison, the prosecution of a domestic abuser sentenced to 23 years in prison, a series of arrests related to child exploitation, and various cases involving violence against individuals.

Cyrus Vance Jr. has been happily married to photographer Peggy McDonnell for 26 years, and they have two children together. He is licensed to practice law in New York, Washington state, and Washington, D.C. Vance is also admitted to argue before the Supreme Court, the Southern District Courts of New York, and the Western and Eastern District Courts of Washington, as well as the Second and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeals.
