Daphne Caruana Galizia, a renowned Maltese journalist, became a global symbol of anti-corruption activism. Known as the "Wikileaks of Malta," she fearlessly exposed government corruption and financial malfeasance. Her blog reached an astounding four hundred thousand readers, in a nation with a population of just four hundred and twenty thousand.
Early Beginnings and Education
Born Daphne Anne on August 26, 1964, in Sliema, Daphne grew up in a politically aware family. She attended a convent school and later a college before graduating with honors in Archaeology from the University of Malta in 1997.
Career in Journalism
Daphne's interest in politics began in her teens, leading to her arrest at age 18 for protesting. In 1985, she married Peter Caruana Galizia and had three sons: Matthew, Andrew, and Paul. Despite her family responsibilities, Daphne pursued her journalism career. She worked as a reporter for the Sunday Times of Malta in 1987, then as a columnist for the same publication. From 1992 onwards, she was deputy editor of The Malta Independent and editor of Taste & Flair magazine.
The Influence of Blogging
Daphne's political views and criticism of the powerful found an outlet in her personal blog, which she started in 2008. There, she posted investigative pieces on high-profile scandals involving Malta's leadership. Her blog featured exposés on the conduct of Chief Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera, the purchase of a palace in Naxxar by British millionaire Paul Golding, and many others.
Panama Papers and International Acclaim
A bombshell in Daphne's reporting came with the publication of information on Malta's involvement in the Panama Papers. She exposed the involvement of government chief of staff Keith Schembri and Health Minister Konrad Mizzi in offshore companies. These companies were later revealed to be in a blind trust controlled by Mizzi and Schembri. Additionally, documents emerged showing that Michelle Muscat, the wife of the Prime Minister of Malta, owned an offshore company in Panama, through which the Muscat family allegedly received kickbacks from Azeri energy companies.
Political Turmoil and Resignation
The Panama Papers scandal forced the resignation of the government. However, in snap elections held in June 2017, the Labour Party and its leader, Joseph Muscat, secured a landslide victory. He resumed his position as Prime Minister, retaining Schembri as chief of staff. Only Konrad Mizzi was left out of the new cabinet, reportedly as a result of the accusations against him.
Harassment and Intimidation
Daphne faced relentless harassment and intimidation for her work. Her bank accounts were frozen, she was arrested twice, and her family home was repeatedly targeted.
Assassination and Aftermath
On October 16, 2017, Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated in a car bomb explosion near her home. Her death sent shockwaves throughout Malta and beyond. The murder remains unsolved, and the family has accused the authorities of inaction.
