Valentin Fedorovich Korsh: A Literary Luminary
Valentin Fedorovich Korsh (1823-1883) was an esteemed journalist and literary historian who significantly shaped the Russian journalistic landscape.
Early Life and Education
Korsh was born in Moscow and pursued studies in history and philology at Moscow University and law at St. Petersburg University.
Journalism Career
Moscow VedomostiKorsh became assistant editor and later editor of the "Moscow Vedomosti." He revitalized the newspaper, emphasizing literary and social commentary and giving prominence to emerging criticism.
St. Petersburg Vedomosti
In 1863, Korsh leased the "St. Petersburg Vedomosti." He recruited renowned journalists and established the newspaper as a leading voice in contemporary journalism. However, his stance on gymnasium reform drew the ire of Count D.A. Tolstoy, leading to his removal from editorship before the lease expired in 1875.
Severny Vestnik and Zagra Nichny Vestnik
Two years later, Korsh's friends acquired the newspaper "Severny Vestnik" and unofficially entrusted him with its editorship. The paper was banned in 1878. In October 1881, Korsh founded "Zagra Nichny Vestnik," which he managed until April 1883.
Literary Achievements
"Universal History of Literature"Korsh played a crucial role in compiling the first 15 volumes of the monumental work "Universal History of Literature" (1880-1883). He contributed extensive commentary, an introduction, and an essay on Greek literature.
