Dagobert Sigmund von Wurmser
Early CareerDagobert Sigmund von Wurmser, an Austrian field marshal, was born on December 11, 1795. In 1741, he began his military service with the French army and fought in the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. In 1750, he joined the Austrian army.
Command in the Seven Years' and Austro-Turkish Wars
During the Seven Years' War, Wurmser led the Special Corps as a field marshal-lieutenant. He also participated in the War of the Bavarian Succession. In the Austro-Turkish War of 1787-1791, he distinguished himself in battle.
Appointment to High Command
In 1792, Wurmser commanded Austrian forces in Breisgau and engaged in battles against the French Republic. Despite setbacks, he played a key role in Austria's military efforts during this period.
Defeat at Castillione and Mantua
In 1796, Wurmser was sent to Italy with an army of 60,000 to confront Napoleon Bonaparte. He divided his forces, but Napoleon's brilliant tactics resulted in an Austrian defeat at Castillione on August 5, 1796. Wurmser retreated to Mantua, where he was blockaded by French forces.
Siege of Mantua and Capitulation
After eight months of resistance, Wurmser capitulated on February 2, 1797, surrendering 16,000 soldiers and officers. His brave defense of Mantua earned him widespread respect.
Post-War Appointment
Wurmser returned to Austria and was appointed governor-general of Hungary. He served in this role until his death in 1797.
Family and Marriage
Wurmser married Sophia Henriette Rosine Juliane von und zu der Tann on January 25, 1761. They had three children:

Awards and Honors
Wurmser received numerous awards for his military service, including:
- Knight Grand Cross of the Military Order of Maria Theresa (October 25, 1793)
