Early Life and Vocation
Damian was a monk of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra and a presbyter of the Russian Orthodox Church. He is revered as a Saint, with his memory celebrated on September 28th and October 5th (Julian calendar).
Monastic Life
Damian joined the Kiev Pechersk Lavra during the abbacy of Saint Theodosius. He became Theodosius's disciple and emulated his virtues, "zealously following the angelic life and all the virtues of his reverend father and mentor."
Asceticism and Healing
Damian practiced severe asceticism, subsisting on only bread and water until his death. He dedicated his nights to prayer and studying the scriptures. Notably, he possessed the gift of healing, and when the monastery received a sick person, "Theodosius would command blessed Damian to pray over the sick."
Prayerful Departure
Approaching death, Damian pleaded with God for a place in the Kingdom of Heaven for both himself and Theodosius. In response, an angel appeared in the likeness of Theodosius and assured him, "Your request will be fulfilled: you will be counted among His saints and with them will dwell in the Kingdom of the Heavenly Master."
Legacy and Veneration
Damian passed away on October 5th, 1071, surrounded by fellow monks of the Pechersk Lavra. He was laid to rest in the Near (Anthony's) Caves of the monastery. His sanctity was recognized, and he is celebrated as a Saint in the Orthodox Church.
