Early Life and Vocation
Vladislav Zavalnyuk, a Belarusian Roman Catholic priest, was born in a devout family and baptized in the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Inspired by his faith, he pursued a vocation to the priesthood, attending Novomuravskaya School and later moving to Riga to study at the Riga Theological Seminary.
Overcoming Obstacles
Despite his passion for the priesthood, Zavalnyuk initially faced obstacles. He worked as a construction worker in Riga while waiting for the opportunity to enter the seminary. With unwavering support from his mother, he persevered and finally enrolled in 1969.
Priestly Ordination and Service
In 1974, Zavalnyuk was ordained a priest by Cardinal Julijans Vaivods. He began his ministry in Moldova, where he tirelessly served approximately 70 Catholic parishes and mission stations. In Slobozia-Raşcov, he oversaw the construction of a church without official permission, an act that led to his arrest and exile to Kazakhstan.
Return to Belarus
After spending time in Krasnoyarsk, Zavalnyuk returned to Latvia in 1980. In 1984, he was transferred to Belarus, where he dedicated himself to reviving and establishing Catholic parishes in Hlybokaye and other regions.
Belarusianization of the Church
From the early 1990s onwards, Zavalnyuk played a crucial role in the Belarusianization of the Catholic Church in Belarus. Through his efforts, Belarusian language and culture were incorporated into liturgical practices and religious life.
Scholarly and Public Activities
Beyond his priestly duties, Zavalnyuk is an accomplished scholar, holding a Doctorate in History. He is also a prolific author, publishing numerous books and articles. As the founder of the Christian Charity Society, he actively engages in humanitarian work. Additionally, he hosts a popular radio program and is a prominent public figure in Belarus.
Current Service
Presently, Father Zavalnyuk serves as the rector of the Red Cathedral in Minsk, the main Catholic church in Belarus. He continues to be a tireless advocate for the Catholic faith and a respected leader in the Belarusian community.
