Early Life and Influences
Born and raised in a quaint village in Buckinghamshire, Dan Black's childhood was immersed in music. Inspired by his father's extensive record collection, Black developed a deep affinity for the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan. His musical taste further expanded to include the likes of Prince, David Bowie, Jane's Addiction, Lou Reed, and the Velvet Underground, along with an eclectic mix of hip-hop. Notably, he refrained from exploring guitar-driven rock music.
Educational and Career Beginnings
Black's adolescent years were marked by strained relationships with his peers, leading to his expulsion from school at the age of 16. Two years later, he relocated to London and enrolled in art college. His unwavering dream of forming a band propelled him to engage in multiple musical collaborations.
The Birth of The Servant
Through connections and classified ads, Black met kindred spirits Matt Fisher (bass guitar) and Trevor Sharpe (drums). Together, they established The Servant, a distinctively English pop group. Black assumed the role of lead vocalist.
The Servant's Discography
The Servant began recording in 2000, releasing two EPs: "Mathematics" and "With the Invisible." The latter featured the addition of guitarist Chris Barrows. In 2004, the band debuted their self-titled album. Their sophomore album, "How To Destroy A Relationship," was released in 2006, preceded by the eponymous single.
Collaboration with Planet Funk
Black collaborated with the emerging Italian house group Planet Funk. His vocals graced four tracks on their debut album, "Non Zero Sumness": "The Switch," "Inside All The People," "Paraffin," and "Who Said." He subsequently toured internationally with the band in support of the album.
One of Black's most exhilarating experiences was performing with Planet Funk as a headliner at their grand show in Rome, which attracted nearly a million attendees. In 2005, he contributed to Planet Funk's album "The Illogical Consequence," adding vocals to "Trapped Upon the Ground," "Peak," and "Out On The Dancefloor." Black did not participate in the recording of their album "Static" due to commitments to his own band.
Recent Endeavors
Black's current musical ventures include the release of three compositions on MySpace: "Yours," "Hypntz," and "Wonder." Music videos have been created for the first two tracks.
