Daniel Sanders: German Philologist and Lexicographer

Early Life and Education

Daniel Sanders was born in Altmark, Germany. He pursued dual studies in mathematics and philology at the University of Berlin, graduating with a doctorate from the University of Halle in 1842.

Teaching and Lexicography

Sanders initially taught at a school in his hometown. Inspired by the monumental German dictionary by the Grimm brothers, he dedicated himself to lexicography. In 1859-1865, he published his renowned "Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache, mit Belegen v. Luther bis zur Gegenwart," a German dictionary with historical citations.

Beyond his magnum opus, Sanders compiled numerous lexicographical works, including:

Sanders also contributed significantly to the standardization of German orthography. He published:

New Greek Philology

In addition to his German lexicographical contributions, Sanders published works in New Greek philology:

Translations and Poetry

Sanders also excelled as a translator, rendering the Song of Solomon into German in 1866. Furthermore, he published a collection of poems titled "Aus den besten Lebensstunden" (1878).
