Jan Rozwadowski: A Pioneering Scholar of Slavic Linguistics
Early Life and EducationJan Rozwadowski was born in Poland and graduated from the University of Lviv in 1875. He specialized in classical languages and pursued his interest in Indo-European and Slavic linguistics. In 1877, he earned his doctorate with a dissertation on the Slavic vocabulary in Lithuanian.
Academic Career
Subsequently, Rozwadowski studied Slavic studies at the University of Leipzig and the University of Berlin. In 1878, he became a private lecturer at the University of Lviv, teaching the grammar of Slavic languages. In 1881, he was appointed as a professor of Slavic languages and literature at the University of Berlin.
Scholarly Contributions
Rozwadowski's research encompassed diverse fields including etymology, toponymy, and the study of Lithuanian language and culture. He also investigated Russian literature and folklore.
Rozwadowski collaborated with eminent European scholars on the fourth edition of Pierre Daniel Huet's "Thesaurus antiquitatum sacrarum", an encyclopedia of religious history, contributing articles as author and editor.
International Recognition
In 1888, Rozwadowski was elected as a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Arts. He also became a foreign corresponding member of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1889. Additionally, he was a member of the Prague and Belgrade Academies of Sciences.
