Early Life and Career
In 1949, Barioni studied music in Milan under the renowned Attilio Bordonali. Initially, he focused on developing his baritone voice, but his teacher soon realized that Barioni had the talent to become a tenor. Over the next five years, Barioni dedicated himself to refining his tenor voice.
Barioni made his operatic debut in 1954 in 'Cavalleria rusticana' at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan. Within his first year as a tenor, he also performed in 'Tosca' and 'Madame Butterfly'. In 1955, he embarked on tours to Egypt and South Africa.
In 1956, Barioni joined the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he sang for seven seasons and appeared in a total of 54 performances. During his time at the Metropolitan Opera, he had the opportunity to work with legendary opera singers such as Maria Callas, Dorothy Kirsten, Giulietta Simionato, Antonietta Stella, and Renata Tebaldi. Barioni made his debut at this renowned theater on February 20, 1956, in 'Tosca'. He also toured extensively in the United States and Canada between 1958 and 1959.
However, after 1962, Barioni never sang at the Metropolitan Opera again. Nevertheless, his tenor voice could still be heard in other American theaters until 1975. He frequently performed in Philadelphia, participating in productions by the Philadelphia Grand Opera Company (PGOC) and the Philadelphia Lyric Opera Company (PLOC).
Later Career and Personal Life
Despite spending a significant amount of time in the United States, Barioni continued to delight opera lovers in his homeland of Italy, as well as in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Canada, Portugal, France, Germany, and Ireland.
In 1958, Barioni appeared in the Italian film 'Carosello di Canzoni'. He made his debut at the illustrious La Scala in Rome in 1966, after being adored by the audience in various theaters in the city for many years.
Barioni's repertoire consists of 31 operas, including 'Nabucco', 'Macbeth', 'Fedora', 'Andrea Chénier', 'Turandot and La Gioconda', 'Lucia di Lammermoor', and 'Rigoletto'.
In 1957, Barioni married Russian-American pianist Vera Franceschi, and they had a son named Giulio Barioni in 1958. Unfortunately, his wife passed away from leukemia in 1966, which led to a decline in Barioni's career. Although he appeared in concerts and performances between 1975 and 1980, his appearances became increasingly rare.
Barioni's final appearance on stage was in a concert with Renata Tebaldi at the Teatro Comunale in Ferrara in 1981, where he also received the 'Premio Frescobaldi' award.
