Early Life and Military Service

Born in Marienbad, Germany, Peter Hofmann grew up in Darmstadt. Before receiving formal classical music training, he sang in a local rock band during his youth. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the West German Armed Forces, where he began taking private singing lessons.

Vocal Training and Operatic Debut

After his military service, Hofmann enrolled at the Karlsruhe Conservatory to study opera. He made his operatic debut in 1972 as Tamino in Mozart's "The Magic Flute" at the Theater Lübeck. Two years later, he performed as Siegmund in Wagner's "Die Walküre" at the Wuppertal Opera, a role that would become one of his signature performances.

International Recognition and Bayreuth Festival

Hofmann's portrayal of Siegmund at the Bayreuth Festival in 1976 in Patrice Chéreau's legendary production of "The Ring Cycle" brought him international acclaim. He returned to Bayreuth several times to perform leading roles in "Parsifal," "Lohengrin," "Tristan und Isolde," and "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg."

Opera Career and Metropolitan Opera

Hofmann's opera career flourished, and he performed on stages around the world, including Stuttgart, Paris, Vienna, London, Chicago, and San Francisco. He became particularly renowned for his heroic tenor (Heldentenor) roles in Wagnerian operas, such as Siegmund, Lohengrin, Tristan, and Parsifal. From 1980 to 1988, he was a regular performer at the Metropolitan Opera.

Popular Music and Musical Theater

In addition to his operatic career, Hofmann pursued a parallel career in popular music. He recorded and performed songs by Elvis Presley and other rock classics, releasing several pop albums that sold well in Europe. In the late 1980s, he shifted his focus to musical theater, starring in the Hamburg production of "The Phantom of the Opera" from 1990 to 1991. He also hosted a popular television show.

Personal Life and Legacy

Hofmann married twice and divorced twice. His second marriage to singer Deborah Sasson lasted from 1983 to 1990. His divorces took a financial toll on him, and he spent his later years in poverty. After a decade-long battle with Parkinson's disease, Hofmann passed away from pneumonia in November 2010 at the age of 66. He is remembered as one of the most celebrated Heldentenors of his generation.
