Biography of Daniil Zabolotnyi
Daniil Kirillovich Zabolotnyi was born on December 16, 1866 in the village of Chebotarka, currently known as Zabolotne in the Kryzhopil district of Vinnytsia Oblast. He passed away on December 15, 1929 in Kyiv. Zabolotnyi was a renowned microbiologist and epidemiologist, considered one of the founders of scientific epidemiology in the USSR.
Early Life and Education
In 1889, Zabolotnyi was arrested and expelled from the natural sciences department of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Novorossiysk University (in Odessa) due to his participation in student riots. However, he managed to complete his studies in 1891 by taking exams as an external student. Zabolotnyi went on to graduate from the Medical Faculty of Kyiv University in 1894.
Contributions to Epidemiology
Zabolotnyi conducted expeditions to study plague in countries such as India, Arabia, Mongolia, and others. He played a significant role in the establishment of the first anti-plague laboratories. Through experimental research, he demonstrated the identical origins of bubonic and pneumonic plague and the therapeutic effect of anti-plague serum. In 1922, he developed the concept of natural foci of plague.
Academic Career
In 1898, Zabolotnyi organized the first bacteriology department in Russia at the Petersburg Women's Medical Institute, where he served as its head until 1928. In 1920, he established the world's first department of epidemiology in Odessa. In 1921, he founded and became the first rector of the Odessa Medical Institute. Moreover, he established the Ukrainian Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in Kyiv in 1928, which now bears his name.
Other Contributions and Recognition
Zabolotnyi was one of the founders of the International Society of Microbiologists. He led the Sanitary-Epidemiological Commission of the Main Sanitary Administration of the Red Army and was a member of the Scientific Medical Council of the People's Commissariat of Health. He also organized courses for military and civilian epidemiologists.
As an author, Zabolotnyi contributed numerous scientific works on plague, cholera, malaria, syphilis, diphtheria, typhoid fever, and other diseases. He became an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in 1922 and served as its president from 1928 to 1929. Additionally, he was elected as an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1929.
