Danny Tenaglia - A Biography
Danny Tenaglia is an American DJ of international renown. He has traveled the world and is a DJ of great significance, having never heard of The Propellerheads, Fatboy Slim, or even the phrase "big beat". He believes that The Chemical Brothers and their ilk are "nothing more than an extension of rock and roll". He is not particularly interested in jungle music, finding it to be a distraction. However, this does not matter much. When your name is Danny Tenaglia and you are a New York house legend after dedicating twenty years to the art of DJing, you can say and do whatever you want.
A Musical Journey
Danny regards his album "Tourism" as a musical journey, which is why it had such a fitting name. He considers it to be the best pure house music album of 1998. Faithful to the best of New York style, it is minimal, classic, insane, and incredibly energetic. The only regret is that the album's title is inspired by one of the biggest cliches in the DJ lexicon.
The Tunnel Residency
Danny's new residency is at The Tunnel in New York, where he can be heard on Saturdays from midnight. However, there are rumors that he will soon leave there as well. Unlike his previous residency at Twilo, he now plays not only for muscle-bound drag queens on ketamine. So what is happening in the Big Apple? Did the Brooklyn boy leave his fondness for men behind? According to Danny, The Tunnel represents a complete shift in his perspective on the role of a DJ. He now plays for a completely new crowd, mainly heterosexual and very young. They were not familiar with Tenaglia from Twilo, but they are drawn to his energy and the heavier music he plays. He has to carefully construct his sets to gradually transition to deeper music, as otherwise, they lose interest. He even plays some trance, and he enjoys it. He has even played a BT track! Danny loves to experiment and evolve with the times while also offering a lesson in history to a whole new generation.
The Tunnel Experience
Although Danny enjoys performing in gay clubs, he finds The Tunnel even more enjoyable. He has always felt pressured to play mainstream hits in order to please the crowd and introduce them to dance remixes of their favorite songs. In The Tunnel, he is not obligated to do that, and if he did, nobody would like it. He prefers playing for mixed crowds, people who are there to simply listen to music and have fun. He doesn't like playing in purely heterosexual clubs where people drink cocktail after cocktail and behave foolishly on the dance floor. Similarly, he doesn't enjoy playing only for gay men who take off their shirts, flex their muscles, and try to pick someone up. For them, music is just an accessory, but for Danny, it is everything.
The Move to The Tunnel
Danny's move to The Tunnel happened relatively recently. Some may know that he made this decision after Paul Smith, the owner of Twilo, his previous residency, hired Danny's arch-nemesis, Junior Vasquez. This maneuver was made in the light of last year's scandal between the two DJs when Vasquez instructed bouncers to physically remove Danny from the club where he was a resident. There are even rumors that these events will be the basis for a soap opera on the American TV channel GAY TV.
A Rivalry and Betrayal
Regarding the incident between him and Vasquez, Danny states that after a year and a half, Vasquez apologized and shook his hand. However, just two weeks later, Vasquez took his place and negotiated behind Danny's back. Danny will never speak to Vasquez again. He cannot trust him. He feels sorry for him, but he believes that Vasquez has nothing else in his life apart from Twilo on Saturdays. Danny thinks that Vasquez is constantly at home, in a deep state of depression.
A Lifelong Passion
Danny has been involved in DJing since he was thirteen years old. Vasquez, on the other hand, started as a fashion designer and then became a hairdresser when his fashion career didn't work out. It was only in his thirties that he tried his hand at DJing and got lucky. Danny acknowledges Vasquez's talent, but at fifty years old, Vasquez is thirteen years older than him, and Danny has been DJing longer than him. Additionally, Vasquez is not even of Spanish descent, his real name being Donald Madden. He is from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, not New York. These facts don't bother Danny, but Vasquez has no right to try to destroy his dreams.
The DJ's Sanctuary
In the end, Danny forgets about club politics and retreats to his protected DJ booth. Here, in isolation and out of reach, he does what he does best: gently touch his vinyl, pull out his portable sampler, and start playing. Whether he will play at The Tunnel next week or not is not really important. What matters is that the journey will be just as amazing.
