Daria Shcherbinin: Belarusian Paralympic Athlete
Early Life and CareerDaria Shcherbinin, a Belarusian Paralympic athlete, was born with a visual impairment and belongs to the LW 2-9 classification for para-sports. As a child, she excelled in taekwondo, becoming the Belarus national champion.
Road to the Paralympics
Inspired at age 12, Shcherbinin began training under coach Dmitry Shpodarenko. At the age of 15, she made her debut in a national para-sports championship, winning both the 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer races. These victories earned her a place in the Belarusian Paralympic team, where she was mentored by coach Ivan Listopad.
Paralympic Success
Shcherbinin competed in the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, where she showcased her skiing and biathlon skills. However, she was unable to participate in the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing due to the suspension of Russia and Belarus from the Games.
Alternative Paralympic Games
Undeterred by the suspension, Shcherbinin and the Belarusian team participated in the alternative "We Are Together. Sport" Games in Khanty-Mansiysk. At these games, she made history by securing her first international medals, including three bronze medals and one silver medal.
Education and Aspirations
Alongside her athletic career, Shcherbinin is pursuing a degree in sports psychology at the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture. She aspires to represent Belarus in future Paralympic Games and continue to inspire others with her determination and resilience.
